CONTACT YOUR HOA

  • We always recommend that you contact your HOA directly to get the most updated information regarding how and when you should submit paint colors for approval
  • HOAS do require that homeowners submit their colors for approval before painting
  • Choosing a suggested scheme does not necessarily mean you’ll receive approval. HOAs are not just reviewing the colors you’ve selected; they also want to make sure the houses around you aren’t too similar, so keep that in mind as you choose colors

NEED HELP FINDING YOUR COLORS?

A sketch of a house and a paint guide

Use our guide to choose your colors...

  • Email your homeowners association for a private link to dozens of your HOA pre-approved, curated combinations
  • Choose from leading paint stores, including BEHR, Benjamin Moore, Kelly Moore, and Sherwin-Williams
  • You may choose up to 3 different palettes per household to test before you paint
  • Once you have chosen your palette(s), email your HOA manager your address with your palette number, i.e., SW1-AB
  • They will email you the correct downloadable exterior paint palette PDF with the paint manufacturer's color number and names for each color
  • The PDF will also recommend the suggested paint finish or sheen (flat/matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, or gloss) for each surface

TEST YOUR COLORS FIRST

  • Pick up a couple of pieces of white poster or foam board to create test boards
  • Paint sample paint on your board, leaving 1-2" border around the edges. It may need two coats, depending on the color choice. Let dry completely
  • This test board can be moved around the exterior of your home so you can view your color choices in different lights, times of day, and spaces around your house. Large areas make great test spaces
  • Be sure to check the colors of your roof and fixed elements like stone or brick
  • Go one step further; now, test on your painting surface. Surfaces absorb and reflect differently so that the color can appear different. Prior and proper planning helps prevent poor paint performance
  • Don't skip these essential steps to ensure you'll love the final product morning, noon, and night for years to come

PREP:

Whether you do your painting or hire a contractor, proper preparation is paramount to a good paint job. Paint is only as good as what is under it. Make needed repairs, scrap, and sand any loose or peeling paint. You will need to clean or power wash whatever you are painting first. Your exterior must be completely dry before painting—caulk or putty seams, cracks, small holes, etc. Carefully inspect your property to remove, completely cover or store anything that is not to be painted. Trees or bushes may need to be trimmed to gain full access to the surfaces to be painted.

PRIME:

Always use the recommended primer by your paint manufacturer and the surface you are painting (also called the substrate). This step will save money and result in a nicer, longer-lasting paint job. Primer/paint combos are good, but not as good as using a good primer specific to the surface you are painting. Primers may also be tinted to increase color coverage at no extra charge when purchasing your paint.

PAINT:

All paint is not created equally. A good quality exterior paint protects your investment and increases its value!
